"Below are the problems that some users have reported.
Note that the first two problems are not likely to occur in the July, 17th released
update, version 1.1. You're encouraged to install this update. Look here
for more information.
The third problem is about the font. This is a problem for almost anyone that
has no HP printer.
The fourth problem is related to compatibility of Tsippor
with newer versions of Windows and Word.
» Some users have reported problems such as that the cursor didn't move correctly and they could not type vowels after using Tsippor, etc.
These problems are most likely due to the fact that they didn't exit Tsippor
(i.e. press F9 after typing Hebrew) before terminating Word. If you activate
Tsippor it attaches a set
of little programs to the keys of your keyboard. Pressing a key then actually
starts a litte program that looks what in the specific context is the appropriate
thing to do, e.g. changing the foregoing patach to a qamets. If you exit Tsippor
it restores the original functions of your keys. So, if you leave Word before
the original key functions are restored, Word will start up the next time without
all of its original key functions, but also without another set of instructions
that are given if you start Tsippor
(i.e. press F9) and that together make out the proper functioning of Tsippor.
You end up not able to type English (or whatever left to right language) correctly.
You can simply solve the problem by pressing F9 twice.
As you can read in the manual, you can also manually activate the macro "A
Off". (Normally this macro is activated if you press F9 after typing Hebrew.)
To do this, go to "Tools" (Dutch: "Extra"), "Macro"
> "Macros". In the window that appears, click on the macro "A
Off" and then click "Run". This restores all original key functions.
Remember: Always press F9 after typing Hebrew.
» Another problem reported is that in stead of a final nun one got a ~ and/or that Word get locked and had to be restarted.
This problem is due to the fact that the Word-option "Smart cut and paste" is not disabled. This option lets Word decide if spaces are to be included in cut and paste actions. This however interferes with Tsippor and must therefore be disabled. Go to menu Tools, Options, Edit and uncheck it.
» There is a problem with the font that will most likely occur to anyone that has no HP printer. The printed text will not match what you see on screen. Vowels are not centered under their consonants, but have been shifted a little to the left; the left side of the vowel now having the same position as the left side of the consonant. Also the small space that follows the qamets is 'printed' too broad. This problems also result in a distorted right margin.
At first I thought that the problem was with the font itself. But now it seems
that it is a problem of the printer-drivers. Other hebrew fonts with comparable
characteristics turn out to have the same problems. So there is no short-time
solution for this. Perhaps I will in the future totally reorganize the font
to eliminate this problem, but this will yet be a long time away. In the meantime
you can do the following:
- If you have a laserprinter:
- * Try to change the True Type-settings of your
printer to "Download as bitmap" and look for the result. Look in the
manual of your printer if you do not know how to do this. Mostly you can do
it by clicking Start - Settings - Printers. Then right-click your printer and
in the window that appears, choose Properties. The True Type options can be
found in the tab Print quality. As a second step you can manually remove the
small spaces that follow a qamets, because these will not be 'printed' with
the correct width. You can find these spaces and delete them all at once by
using "Control F" and then type in the field for the text fo find
"Alt 0181", etc. Afther you deleted these spaces, the qamets will
have too little space between itself and the following consonant, but this is
the best option for printing the text.
- * You can also try to use the printer-driver
of the HP IIP. Look on your Win95 or 98 CDROM or try to get it from Internet.
This should print the text correctly, although the print quality will only be
300 dpi.
- Buy a HP printer.
» Tsippor is compatible with Windows 95 to Windows XP. But there are two issues. First: the program file TsipporW97.dot is not automatically installed in the right folder. Second: the font Tsippor is not displayed.
- The first problem can easily be overcome. You first have to locate the Startup
or Wrdstart folder of Microsoft Office. If you know where this folder is, type
the path in the field that is displayed in the installation process. For example:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Startup
You can also manually copy the file to this folder after the installation is
completed. Look where the file is placed and copy it manually.
If you do not know where to find this folder, you can also add the file to this
folder via the Templates and Add-Ins option in the Extra menu of Word. If you're
there, click Add and look for the file and add it this way. Be sure that the
check box in front of the filename is selected, otherwise the file is not loaded
if you start Word again.
- To solve the second problem, do the following:
Go to the Fonts folder, either via the Control Panel or Windows Explorer (look
in the Windows folder). Select the Tsippor
font and move it to another folder, for example, your desktop. Then click Install
New Fonts in the File menu. Look for the Tsippor
font (Tsippor.ttf) and install
it.
Note: Be sure you MOVED the font out of the fonts folder, before you install
it this way. It is important that, after moving the font, the font is no longer
in the Fonts folder and that is comes back again only via installing it properly,
via the File menu.
